Case Study

Limestone Patio with Dark Granite Edging

After finding Kennedy Landscapes online, the customer visited our garden display showground to explore different landscaping options and discuss ideas for their garden. The existing patio had only been installed around a year earlier, but unfortunately it had already developed significant problems. The pointing between the sandstone slabs was failing, and several slabs had become loose, leaving the patio looking tired and unfinished despite being relatively new.

Following a detailed inspection, it became clear that the original patio had not been constructed correctly. The falls of the patio were incorrect, meaning rainwater was not draining away as it should, while the slabs had also been laid without a slurry primer on the underside. This significantly reduced the bond between the paving and the mortar bed and was a major factor in the slabs becoming loose.

Unfortunately, the condition of the existing installation meant there was no practical way to repair the patio properly without addressing the underlying problems. The decision was therefore made to remove the existing patio completely and rebuild the area from the ground up, ensuring the correct construction methods and drainage were used throughout.

For the new patio, the customers selected Antique Grey limestone paving, complemented by a dark granite edging. The combination creates a contemporary finish, with the darker granite providing a crisp border that frames the limestone and gives the patio a more defined appearance.

The project extended beyond the main patio to include the side pathway and the path leading towards the shed. Alongside the new pathway, we created a new planting area, introducing an opportunity to soften the hard landscaping and add colour and interest to the finished garden.

One of the most important aspects of the rebuild was getting the patio falls and drainage right. The new patio was carefully constructed with the correct fall to direct rainwater away from the house and towards a slot drain positioned along the lower edge of the patio. The drainage was then connected into the property’s existing drainage system.

The slot drain provides a much more discreet and streamlined solution than the larger linear drainage channels used on the original patio. We also incorporated the dark granite edging directly alongside the slot drain, creating a neat transition between the paving and drainage while helping the whole detail blend seamlessly into the design.

Design. Transform. Enjoy.

The Result

The finished garden is a significant improvement on the original patio, both aesthetically and technically. The Antique Grey limestone provides a clean and contemporary surface, while the dark granite edging adds definition and complements the discreet slot drainage. Most importantly, the patio has been rebuilt correctly with appropriate falls, drainage and paving installation methods, creating a durable outdoor space designed to perform well for years to come.
